Migration in New Zealand increases

New Zealand has had its largest annual migrant increase ever this year. In the year to June the population has grown by 97,300. The 2.1% increase is the largest population increase the country has had since 1974. To put it into context over the last decade, previous to this year the average annual increase has been 32,300. In a year the annual increased has tripled. Statistics New Zealand estimate that by the year 2021, 41% of New Zealanders will be of mixed ethnicity.

Increase from Asia

New Zealanders returning home comprised a quarter of the rise while India, the Philippines, and the UK dominated the rest. International students are a major contributing factor to the record high, Indian students in New Zealand alone have increased dramatically. In 2004, just 611 Indians came to study compared to 10,708 last year.

Migrants from Asia are also a contributing part of the increase, with migrants from Asia doubling those from Europe for the first time since 1979.

More interest from the UK

There has also been a spike from the UK since the historic Brexit vote came into being. Since Brexit there has been a drastic increase in interest from the country. 10,647 people have enquired about emigrating during the 49 days after Brexit. Whilst 4,599 enquired during the same period in 2015 . Brexit may have given those sitting on the fence about emigrating the final push.
