What are the items that I should bring with me because they’re not available (or are too expensive) where I am going?

The Raleigh/Durham metropolitan area offers an abundance of shopping opportunities. There are pharmacies, supermarkets, department stores, and outdoor and indoor shopping centers (malls). Anything you could possibly want or need is readily available and at your fingertips.

We do recommend however, that you bring enough prescription medication (if needed) in case of an emergency until you can have a new prescription provided for you by a local doctor.

Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit?

You will not have any problems finding clothes to fit. Most clothing stores carry a wide assortment of sizes. There are also many specialty shops for taller and larger people. To get a list of these stores, check the local phone book or the Internet. If a garment needs to be fitted, many of the local dry cleaners can provide tailoring services and most suit shops provide fitting services as well.

What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at?

There are many grocery stores to choose from. There are small family owned markets, smaller specialty markets and large chain stores such as Safeway. Depending on your personal preferences you should be able to find all of your favorite foods in the local area.

Where can other household items (such as cleaning materials and home furnishings) be found?

Household items can be found at most malls and in specific department stores. Large chain stores such as Wal-mart, Target and Kmart also sell a wide variety of household items.

For furniture needs, there are specific furniture stores that specialize in items from different countries and regions around the world. Department stores such as Macy's or JC Penney's carry furniture as well, but with a more limited selection.

What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city?

Price is the number one factor when shopping. It will vary from store to store. Otherwise, the only other factors are special needs (hard-to-find items) and location. Keep it in mind that some stores will not deliver items to you if you live too far from the store's location.
