At which grocery stores do expats in your city typically shop?

The retail market is dominated by a few supermarket chains, Spar, Billa and Merkur. All have supermarkets in nearly every large town and you will find them throughout Vienna. They carry an assortment of vegetables, meat and dairy products from organic farms as well as all other typical groceries. The Spar department store has a Gourmet branch with a popular delicatessen but is not as expensive as its rival; Meinl am Graben. Meinl offers an excellent shopping experience and also serves appetizers and drinks in the ambiance of Vienna’s traditional ‘Graben’ in the heart of Vienna.

What factors might affect my shopping habits in this country/city?

An important factor — depending on which country you are relocating from — could be the opening hours. Most shops and department stores open at either 9am or 9:30am and close at 6pm. Thursdays usually allow people to shop longer with most shops closing at 8pm. Sunday is closed for business except at railway stations where shops (supermarkets, drug stores and book stores mainly) are open seven days a week from 6am until 9pm.
