Hyderabad Transport

Will I need to drive my own vehicle to conduct my everyday life (work/school/shopping) at my destination?
Driving your own vehicle in Hyderabad can be very challenging and most opt not to. Some of the main roads are wide but the inner ones can get quite congested. During off peak hours, driving is not that bad, but during the day it can be quite frustrating because many drivers do not maintain basic road etiquette. Expatriates generally prefer to commute in chauffeur-driven vehicles.

Describe typical public transportation an expat might use to get around the city.
Taxis: These are the best option of travel within the city and can be easily identified by their company name written on the cab, along with the phone number to be contacted for booking. It is metered and payment made is as per the fare card.
Auto rickshaws: Three-wheelers move around in all parts of Hyderabad. They are metered and payments have to be made as per the fare card. They are cheaper in comparison to taxis and easily available, best for suburban travel.
There is also the option of buses and local trains available, but not advisable for expats.
Cabs: They are a better option when compared to auto rickshaw. They are better-looking cars equipped with GPS, AC and English-speaking drivers; naturally these are expensive than auto rickshaw . You need to book these cabs by smartphone apps or through internet.  Uber and Ola are the most common online cab aggregators. Cabs from these aggregators are better and more frequently sanitized than other transportation options.

Could an expat also use public transportation to get out of the city—to surrounding towns, recreation areas or suburbs? If so, list options.
It is possible to take public transit out of the city. Good air-conditioned taxis and private buses are easily available. For short journeys, taxis are a much better choice and in good weather they can be fun!

Most public transportation services were discontinued during the lockdown or when Covid cases had surged. Although now they are resumed, you may still need to check the recent local guidelines before travelling by public transportation.
