What are the items that I should bring with me because they’re not available (or are too expensive) where I am going?
You should have no trouble finding anything that you need. However, just to be safe, you may want to bring your favorite brands of over-the-counter medications and vitamins.

Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit?
This shouldn't be a problem because clothes are available all over in a variety of sizes and shapes.
Additionally, tailors are inexpensive and very good.

What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at?
Supermarkets have developed on a fairly large scale in Kolkata. These stores sell most varieties of processed and packaged foods. There are still no national chains, but there are professionally managed stores that offer everything that one could possibly think of, including vegetables, fruits, grains, packaged food, ready-to-eat foods, frozen foods, meats and dairy products. They also sell dry goods and convenience items. You can also buy cosmetics, soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, tissues, foil wrap, detergent, cleaners, bug sprays, etc. Some stores even carry a range of imported goods.
There are many large marketplaces where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Some prominent market areas are Gariahat, Lake Market and New Market.

Where can other household items (such as cleaning materials and home furnishings) be found?
The entire city of Kolkata is like a giant market: all of the streets are lined with shop after shop.
Additionally, Kolkata has several modern shopping centers including the Metro Plaza, The Emami Shopper's City, The Shreeram Arcade and the newly renovated New Market.
Other popular shopping areas include Chowringhee Road/Lindsay Street, South Kolkata's Ballygunge AC Market and Dakhinapan. College Street is a book-lover's dream, with some of the biggest and best bookshops in the country. Each of these areas will have open markets or shops where expatriates will be able to find all their necessary household goods.

What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city?
Though most shopping complexes accept credit cards, some smaller establishments may require payment in cash only. Digital money transfers using major UPI apps are also accepted widely. Payments can also be directly made by scanning QR code or by transfers from Payment Banks or Wallets.
