Stockholm Accommodation

It’s important to plan in advance and to be prepared to pay for assistance in searching for a place to live. Key factors to consider are location, budget and type of apartment or house desired.

What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?

Some of the popular neighborhoods in the city are: Djursholm, Kungsholmen, Östermalm and Bromma.

  • Djursholm offers large houses with green areas, marinas, riding facilities, golf course and other sports facilities. The British International School is located in Djursholm. It takes about 15 minutes to drive into the city, which is accessible via subway, local trains and buses.
  • Kungsholmen has many new restaurants and shops. Hospitals, institutions and administrative buildings are in close proximity, including the Swedish high school where classes are conducted in English.
  • Ostermalm is popular among the affluent; large apartments here are highly priced. Its address on Strandvagen is fashionable and prestigious.
  • Bromma is located on the west of the city where houses and apartments are available. It is popular among French families because the French school is located in this area. Many recreational areas can be found here.

For those expats who choose to live somewhat further outside the city, there are also terrific options close to water and nature.

Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?

As a tenant, you do not have to pay the deposit or any rent before a binding contract is written and signed by both parties. Usually, the deposit together with the first month’s rent has to be paid in advance.

Are utilities generally included in the price of rent, or are they extra?

Utilities are generally not included in the monthly rent (these can include the Gas, Electricity, Water and Telephone utilities).

Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?

Stockholm is generally safe. But, as in all capitals and larger cities, there are areas that one should avoid.

I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?

Electricity in Sweden is 230 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. Outlets in Sweden generally accept 1 type of plug: two round pins.
