Most international schools organize activities after school or during lunchtime. Examples of some of these activities include art, bookmaking and paper craft, dance, drama, tennis, country dancing, football, board games, sewing, clay modeling and chess.

What's it like to be a teenager in this city? Are there any particular challenges I should be aware of as a parent?
Please note the legal drinking age is 16 (18 for liquors) and the legal age for smoking tobacco is 16. 

Also, keep in mind that a coffee shop in Amsterdam is not a place where you can just drink coffee. Marijuana and hash are sold and consumed at such establishments.

Are there any organizations/social groups in the area that cater exclusively to young people ages 12-17?
For addresses and telephone numbers of boy and girl scouting and other social groups for young people, please check in the "gemeentegids." Also, schools should be well informed about these organizations.

I want my child to get the most out of our stay in this country. Are there any specific opportunities to teach young people about the local culture?
In the Concert Gebouw (Concert Hall), there are different children's concerts.

Also try:

  • Circustheater Elleboog - Circus school.
  • Kid's Cafe - a small restaurant staffed by children who cook, serve, wash up, etc.

And every year, ‘Sinterklaas’ arrives on his steamboat from Spain together with his Zwarte Pieten (helpers) around the middle of November. He celebrates his birthday on December 5 with all the children in the Netherlands!
