Bangkok Accommodation

What are the top factors to keep in mind when searching for a place to live in your city?

A few top factors to keep in mind when deciding where you want to live are the proximity to work, school, public transport and infrastructure. Travel times can be long due to traffic congestion. Also note that rents vary greatly, depending on conditions and type of accommodation.
Centrally located accommodation are obviously proven to be more favorable. On the outskirts of town, single houses are available but there is no public transport, such as the Skytrain or subway, nearby. When traveling by road only, although quite a distance from town, expressways and elevated toll ways can be used to shorten commuting times.

What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?

Expatriates tend to gravitate toward Sukhumvit Road (noted for its little side streets), Silom and Sathorn. All three of these areas are located in the center of town, near shopping and most other amenities. Centrally located apartments are popular. Town houses and single houses are also available centrally, but prices are high. There are many more single houses on the outskirts of town, but traffic can be a deterrent.

The schools near popular areas are New International School of Thailand and St. Andrew's. A little further out is the Bangkok Patana School (British curriculum but also offers International Baccalaureate for senior high school levels).

Also popular is the Nichida Tani gated compound, which is about 45 minutes away from town. The renowned International School of Bangkok (American system) is located in this compound.

Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?

If you are considering a house, you should be aware that certain areas can flood in rainy season so it’s important to check that there is sufficient drainage.

Crime against expats is low. Many single houses do employ security guards as a deterrent. Apartment complexes all have security.

I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?

Electricity is 220 Volt, 60 Hz. American appliances will work with adapters, though doing so will probably shorten the life span of the devices.
