Brisbane is a great place to raise children. It is very well equipped and all major department stores and shopping complexes feature facilities, such as baby changing areas and feeding rooms. Train transport is relatively stroller friendly, but bus travel can be a little more challenging. Most cities and suburbs have maintained parks with plenty of play equipment for youngsters.

Where can I get a list of reliable childcare providers/nannies?
The phone book offers a comprehensive list of childcare centres, family day care and kindergartens. Also, consider a referral service which specializes in babysitters and nannies. If you are having trouble locating one you feel comfortable with please contact the Crown Brisbane office.

Discuss any safety issues for children in this city.
Brisbane is a safe environment for children, though it is recommended that you speak to your local school to find out whether there are any particular concerns specific for your area. Children should always be accompanied and supervised by an adult and should never talk to strangers. Bike helmets are compulsory when riding a bicycle at any age and normal supervision of children is required. In the summer, children should wear hats and sunscreen to protect against harmful rays. At surf beaches, be sure children swim between the flags -- where lifeguards are on duty.

What are the most popular kid-friendly attractions in the area?
Located within the Brisbane suburbs and rates one of the "Top 10 Zoos in the World", Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in the Brisbane suburb of Fig Tree Pocket is the world's finest and largest Koala sanctuary, with over 130 koalas. Also housing kangaroos, platypus, lorikeets and many varieties of snakes and other Aussie wildlife, it can be reached via a scenic route down the Brisbane River.

Also in Brisbane and just across the river from the CBD is Southbank (site of Expo 88) - a rare lifestyle precinct where the idyllic Queensland environment is seamlessly integrated with the cafes, restaurants, boutiques and cultural experiences that have come to characterise an inner-city lifestyle. 40 minutes south of Brisbane you will find Warner Bros Movie World, SeaWorld, Dreamworld and Wet n Wild. These are all theme parks and great daily excursions to do with young people. You can also head up the coast to Alma Park Zoo and Australian Zoo (made famous by the late Steve Irwin).

What are the most popular activities for kids after school or on weekends?
Schools provide after-school activities such as sports, art and drama classes. In the summer, swimming at a local beach or pool is a favourite pastime. Kids also enjoy going to the movies, game arcades and shopping with friends. And, they like to just hang out with their friends at each other's homes.

What's it like to be a teenager in this city? Are there any particular challenges I should be aware of as a parent?
Being a teenager in Brisbane is similar to other places. As mentioned above, they love to spend time with their friends and do fun things. Adjustment to any new place takes time, but once they get settled in and meet new friends, they are going to love it here!

Are there any organizations/social groups in the area that cater exclusively to young people ages 12-17?
Most children in this age group haven any spare time at weekends and after school taken up with school sporting activities or other extra-curricular activities such as dance classes. Youth groups such as the Scouts or Girl Guides are also popular, as are church groups and supervised youth discos. Summer camps which focus on particular sports, such as tennis, are also popular.

I want my child to get the most out of our stay in this country. Are there any specific opportunities to teach young people about the local culture?
The Museum of Brisbane at City Hall has a wealth of information on the city's early history as well as having lots of visual displays for the children to enjoy. Additionally, the local culture is taught in the school system and children will also find that their public library is a good resource. Additionally, there are several local events that occur on a weekly basis that teach young people all about the local culture. Check with your local library for up to date happenings in each area.
