Barcelona Young People

How well-equipped is this city for those raising infants/toddlers? Specifically, are there public places to change diapers, maintained playgrounds, etc?
Spain, in general, is very child- and baby-friendly, as it is such a family-oriented country. The big stores and supermarkets all have baby-changing facilities within the ladies’ restrooms, but not always on every floor so you will have to ask where to find them. There are plenty of small playgrounds in the local neighborhoods, which are generally well maintained.

I want my child to get the most out of our stay in this country. Are there any specific opportunities to teach young people about the local culture?
The Catalan and Spanish languages will normally be taught at school; mingling with the local population will also improve language skills. The main festivals in Barcelona-Catalonia are:

  • April 23: Sant Jordi (Saint George), the patron saint’s day of Catalonia. It is a custom for the men to give a rose to the women, and for the women to give a book to the men.
  • June 24: Sant Joan (Saint John, midsummer's day), arguably the most important holiday in Catalonia.
  • September 24 (approximately): La Mercé, feast day for Our Lady of Mercy, patron saint of Barcelona city. This has a spectacular fireworks show in the evening.
