How close-knit is the expat community in this area? How do I get involved with it?

As in any foreign country, expats will inevitably seek each other out. There are a number of national organizations, but most are open to anyone of any nationality. Some of the larger associations are American, British, Australian/New Zealand, Canadian, French, German and Japanese.

These associations would be a good start to meet people who can help bridge the gap between your culture and Malaysia’s culture. There are business organizations as well, such as the American Chamber of Commerce. These meet on a regular basis.

One thing to note is that, due to the diversity of people in the city and the ease of using English, there tends to be a decreased reliance on the expat network as you live in KL for a longer period of time.

Besides expat groups, what is the best way to make social connections outside of work?

Any of the associations mentioned above offer a variety of programs and social activities. There are also a few international/interdenominational churches that offer other ways to meet people. There are numerous volunteer opportunities in KL as well. In addition, there are active theatre groups, nature groups, culture groups and sporting groups.

Where can I meet other singles in this city?

KL has a number of popular night life spots in the City Center, Bintang Walk, Bangsar Baru and Sri Hartamas areas. Bars and clubs are the most common hangouts, but activities and classes are also good meeting grounds for singles.

Are there any unique networking opportunities for accompanying partners?

There are a number of activities organized by the expat associations that include educational, sport and social outings. Most of the activities are targeted toward the female accompanying partner, but men may also find some of the programs interesting. Some international schools also offer opportunities for involvement in a variety of programs on a volunteer basis.
