Getting the most out of a ‘Look-See’ visit

A look-see visit is an opportunity for you to look around your new area and see what life would be like there for you. This really is a mist for anyone wanting to move to a new country and settle down there. You can look at images online, study all about your new home and read all the posts by other expats but you really will not know if this is the place for you until you visit for yourself.

Your visit should be about finding out how you fit into this new world you are creating for yourself. What the local culture is like, what the local shops and entertainment in the area are like, what your potential neighbours are like. There will much for you to want to explore and think about so it’ll be worth planning what you want to get out of it in advance.

If you have children and you choose to take this visit without them it would be worth taking as many pictures as you can so that they learn from this visit as well.

Employment

If you have a new job lined up, contact your workplace in advance of your trip. You may be able to have a tour of your new work environment and meet your new colleagues. This will make you feel more relaxed for your first official work day.

Schools

Visit any potential schools during your visit, or the one you have chosen if that is the case. Take pictures if you are allowed to show your child later.

Facilities

Find out if all the necessities of your life will be readily available to you such as prescription medicines. Go to the local bank, visit the entertainment venues nearby. Find out if the shopping centres and shops stock the items you and your family would like.

Transport

Research the local transportation and take a few trips to see if this is right for you or if you will need a car to get around daily. It will also help you to get a feel for the traffic flow and how long it may take you to around.
