No, as you can get a driver very easily and inexpensively. Plus, the public transit system is very efficient. The metro is quite busy during rush hour.

Your current license will be valid here, assuming you get it translated into Russian. Ask Crown St. Petersburg for further information on where to get that done. Officially, it is not possible for foreigners to obtain a Russian driver's license unless they have Russian citizenship.

If you're riding the Metro or the bus, you can purchase your tickets on the vehicle. If you're traveling by train, you can obtain your tickets in the station. Also, for buses, trolleys or trams, you can purchase tickets in small booths at some of the bus stops.
