How close-knit is the expat community in this area? How do I get involved with it?
In Cape Town, we have various expat communities. There is a Portuguese-speaking community of more than 500,000, which experienced a boost in population by the collapse of Portugal's colonies in Angola and Mozambique. There are also immigrants from many European countries, including Holland, Germany, France, and Belgium to name just a few. The Chinese have become a small group of growing importance and a prominent Jewish community has made an impact on all spheres of South African life. Cape Town has the second-largest Jewish center and has a Jewish population of 21,000 as compared with Johannesburg’s 59,000. Cape Town also has the fifth-largest community of Irish extractions outside of Ireland.
