Are there any vaccinations I should get or other health precautions to take as I prepare for my move to your city?
Please check with your medical professional.

Before I get sick, what should I know about seeking medical care in your city as an expat?
Most expats have an international insurance package. Please check with your human resources department for details and preferred medical providers. If you are on Japanese health insurance, you will want to use facilities within the system. Doctors are more apt to have some English ability than their reception staff. We recommend that you register at a medical clinic soon after your arrival. Overall, the quality of care is good in Tokyo.

What is the word for "doctor" in the local language?
The word is “isha”. You address the doctor as “…-Sensei”.

What is the best way to locate a suitable health care provider?
Check with Crown Tokyo, your embassy or your international school.

Do expats in the area tend to leave the city/area/country to seek medical care? If so, why and where do they go?
Generally, expats will go to Tokyo for non-routine medical care as there are a fair amount of foreign language options in Tokyo. If you are receiving medical treatment that is cutting-edge technology, it may not be available here.

What is the number to call to summon help in an emergency? List medical/fire/police.
Dial: 110 for police and 119 for medical ambulance (“kyu kyu”) or fire (“kaji”)

What do I do if there's an emergency in the middle of the night—or at another time when my normal doctor/clinic is unavailable?
Call your doctor (some clinics have a doctor on-call*).

How will I recognize a pharmacy? What is it called in the local language?
Pharmacy is “Yakyoku”. Your doctor’s reception can refer you to a nearby pharmacy. Please note: Not all drug stores have a pharmacy. Prescription drugs are strictly controlled and require a prescription from a doctor in Japan.

Is the water safe to drink?
Yes.
