Yes, credit and debit cards are widely accepted around the city. In some cases, you will find that smaller businesses only accept cash so, it is recommended that you carry a small amount of cash on you.

Preauthorized withdrawals is an efficient way of paying gas, water and electricity bills. With this method, your bills are automatically deducted from your bank account. The various utility companies can help you with the arrangements. Also, many bills can be paid online via bank or credit union Web sites or of course by mailing a personal check. Never mail payments in cash!

What are the requirements for opening a bank account? At what stage of the settling-in process should I open it?

It is recommended that you open a bank account as soon as you arrive in San Francisco. You will need a photo ID, a social security number and money for the initial deposit (normally $100.00). It is not necessary to show proof of permanent residence.

It is highly recommended that you have a credit card available when visiting or traveling in San Francisco, as car rental agencies don't accept cash and most hotels will only accept a credit card.
