All residents in Sweden are eligible for health care services. Go to the local clinic (Vårdcentralen) for non-emergency cases. The fee for outpatient care varies with different counties. To register, bring your Swedish ID card to the hospital's information counter to obtain health care.


What is the word for "doctor" in the local language?

Läkare. Swedes will also understand the English word “doctor.”


What is the best way to locate a suitable health care provider?

Check the directory for the local clinic in your area. You will be assigned a family doctor. Remember, if you cannot speak Swedish, you can request an interpreter or a “tolk.”


Do expats in the area tend to leave the city/area/country to seek medical care? If so, why and where do they go?

They do not normally do so. But in certain cases, treatment may be re-directed to another specialized area where necessary.

A pharmacy is called an Apoteket (like the English word “apothecary”). Local pharmacy signs are in green.
