How close-knit is the expat community in this area? How do I get involved with it?

Bangkok's expat community is very close. There are many networking functionsorganized by foreign chambers of commerce as well as a group of individuals who share common interest, example, foodies, etc.
To find out when and where they are, join any of the local Chambers of Commerce or just check their websites. You don't need to be a member to attend Chamber functions, though your admission fee will be higher if you're not.
