What is the local currency?
The official currency of Sweden is Swedish Kronor (SEK).

What denominations does it come in?
The Swedish Kronor comes in coins and SEK 20, SEK 50, SEK 100, SEK 500, SEK1000.

What is the best way to exchange currency?
You can exchange currency at any bank throughout the city, as well as at train stations or at the airport.

What are commonly-used forms of payment for everyday purchases (such as groceries)?
  • Debit card (EC card)
  • Credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club, American Express)
  • Cash

Will I be able to use my credit card around town? If not, list when I’ll need cash.
You will be able to use your credit card at most places in Stockholm, but it is advisable that you carry cash as well, just in case. ATM machines will allow you to withdraw cash quickly and hassle-free. Most of the shops and restaurants accept payment by card.

By what method are bills (such as rent and utilities) paid?
There are 2 ways to make payments:
  • Bring the invoice with you to your local “Kassaservice” and pay cash or with card. It is generally a 45 SEK per bill charge to do this.
  • Pay online. The easiest way to pay your bills in Sweden is by using the online banking facility provided by your own bank.
Crown works with the SEB bank and they provide information about their Internet banking in English.

What are the requirements for opening a bank account? At what stage of the settling-in process should I open it?
To open a bank account with your Swedish personal ID number, the following documents are required:
  • Passport
  • Employment letter showing the company’s organization number, your salary, start date and length of the contract, number of working hours per week. (in original)
  • Application or decision from the Migration board (Right of Residence or Uppehålltillsrätt)) for EU citizens; the decision from the Migration board (Work and Residence Permit or Uppehålltillstånd)
  • Document from the tax office with your Swedish personal ID number shown
 
To open a bank account without a Swedish personal ID number, the following documents are required:
  • Letter of Recommendation from your bank
  • Verified copy of your passport
  • Employment letter showing the company’s organization number, your salary, start date and length of the job contract, number of working hours per week
  • Completed form A7438
It is also suggested to consider opening a bank account in the same bank that your new Employer banks with.

Will foreign residents be able to find banking services in their native languages?
Most, if not all, can speak English, but not other foreign languages.

Are there any restrictions on services for those who are new to your country?
Generally no, but it also depends on what services you need. However, some companies will not provide any services for a private client without a credit record in Sweden.

What are typical banking hours?
Banks are generally open Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Many branches have extended hours at least one day per week (until 6 p.m.) Banks are closed on weekends.

Are automatic teller machines (ATMs) available around the clock?
Yes, they can be found all over Stockholm.

Is there any other money information that might help me?
It is always good to have some cash for urgent situations, but, in general, credit cards are accepted everywhere.
