Before I get sick, what should I know about seeking medical care in your city as an expat?
You would not be refused medical care, but in Aga Khan and government hospitals admittance is relatively cheap. Most expatriates go to IST Clinic (International School of Tanganyika Clinic), run by professional doctors who charge in U.S. dollars for all services. To join and get an account, one needs to pay a refundable deposit of US$150 per person or family.
There are several very good dental surgeons in Dar es Salaam.

Do expats in the area tend to leave the city/area/country to seek medical care? If so, why and where do they go?
Yes, if they are wary of the local facilities. However, the standards here are generally good. The local institutions will refer patients to Kenya, South Africa if the situation warrants it.

Ambulance 112
Fire 112
Police 112
However, these numbers are rarely answered so it is best to get the emergency numbers of the medical institution you belong to. The three or four security firms offer a wonderful ambulance and medical assistance service.
