How close-knit is the expat community in this area? How do I get involved with it?
As Germany is a modern, western country, expatriates generally blend into the normal flow of people moving around town.
Networking is best accomplished in business groups and at expat events arranged through such organizations as the American Chamber of Commerce and a number of smaller groups that meet on a regular basis.
The American Women’s Club of the Taunus and the British Club of the Taunus present a more social approach for women in the region. Events are published on their web sites.
The Frankfurt International Ski Club offers a number of weekend ski trips that unite ski bums and novices for weekend adventures in the Alps.
International churches are also a great place for finding like-minded groups with international ties.
Trinity Lutheran Church and Christ the King Anglican Church are two examples, though there are many more.
Beside expat groups, what is the best way to make social connections outside of work?
Finding groups where one can socialize is very important in the first months of any new environment.
Frankfurt offers many sporting groups, theater clubs, hobby courses and the like. These bring people together on a regular basis.
Where can I meet other singles in this city?
Frankfurt is a city full of single people. A recent newspaper report listed the population of singles in the city at 50 per cent of the population.
Outside of the typical bars and nightclubs, courses through the city program provide excellent locations to meet people. Many gyms offer fitness classes, which can be a great place to meet new people on a semi-regular basis.
Germany also has an online network called New-in-Town, which connects singles new to any metropolitan area in the country.
Are there any unique networking opportunities for accompanying partners?
As mentioned, the American Women’s Club of the Taunus offers an outlet for women’s discussion and support in the region. Men have fewer options as “trailing spouses.”
