Kilmacolm, which is approximately 20 miles from the city centre, is a popular location for families relocating to Glasgow and is well known for its private schooling. Kilmacolm is great for finding family homes, but not so great for flats (apartments).
Newtom Mearns, which is approximately five miles from the city centre, is more popular for families with teenage children -- again for schooling, etc. It is close to the city centre and has great choices of family homes.
The south side of Glasgow City is ideal for young expats, due to close proximity to city centre – along with great pubs and clubs. This is also true of the West end of Glasgow.
Most tend to rent, especially in the first year or two to get a feel of what different areas are like to live in.
Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?
Usually, you will need to pay one month's rent plus a security deposit -- which is normally four to six weeks' rent. You may also have to pay an administration fee which varies depending on the agency, and stamp duty (the amount depending on the amount of annual rent you are paying).
Note that you are required to pay for a TV license if you have a television at home.
Gas, electric, water, telephone, council tax and resident parking permit fees are payable in addition to rent.
Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?
This depends on the location and suburb in Glasgow but you should always take sensible precautions as with any big city.

Current is 220 volts. The plug is three pin. Most unfurnished properties will still have white goods (for example, fridge and washing machine) available for tenants.
