What are some examples of these schools?

There are a few schools for foreign children in Guangzhou, each with their own characteristics that may make them more or less suitable for your children.

  • American International School of Guangzhou - Located in the grounds of a popular residential development in eastern Guangzhou, this co-educational American school is one of the largest international schools in the area. It offers and American curriculum, accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, but is also an authorized International Baccalaureate school. This school accepts children from Preschool through Grade 12.

  • Utahloy School - Located in Golden Lake Garden, this school has a computer center, library, design and technology room and art room. There is also an outdoor playground with a swimming pool. This school has local accreditation, from the Ministry of Education in Beijing, which means that you should check whether enrolment at this school would be credited by schools in your home country. The program is based on English National Curriculum and Australian National Profile, modified to suit the needs in China. Utahloy is an authorized International Baccalaureate middle year’s program provider.

  • Guangzhou Grace Academy - Located in the Riverside Garden residence complex, this school accepts children from 3 to 16 years old. Classrooms come equipped with computers in classrooms. It has an outdoor playground and a swimming pool. A religiously-affiliated (Christian) school, it a member of the worldwide organization called Schools of Tomorrow.

Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?

No, the competition is not excessive, and there are usually enough spots at these schools for all children of foreign families moving to the area.

Are pre-schools also widely available (for children approx. 2 to 5 years old)?

How are most kids transported to and from school?

Many expat children take buses organized by international schools. These buses stop at many of the serviced residential compounds and other developments popular with expats. Many families who have a car and/or driver take drive their children to school.

The school year normally starts at the end of August or start of September and ends in mid to late June.
