Generally speaking, owning your own vehicle is the most convenient option. It is, however, not always required. Depending on your destination, public transportation is available including taxis, buses and very limited metro systems.

How can I legally drive a vehicle in this city?

A US Driver's License and driver liability insurance are required in LA. The legal age for drivers is 18 years old. A Learner's Permit can be obtained at 16 years. However, with a learner's permit, there are additional requirements such as being accompanied by an adult. Please note that seat belts must always be worn by both drivers and passengers.

In regards to transportation, are there any safety issues I should be aware of?

No. You should be aware, though, that while California allows right hand turns on red lights, you must come to a complete stop before doing so. When it is safe to turn, you are legally allowed to go right on a red light.

You can purchase tickets from the bus driver, and at local train and metro stations.
