What are the items that I should bring with me because they’re not available (or are too expensive) where I am going?

Deodorant is hard to find and shops do not offer a great selections of western CDs and books. It is a good idea to bring a sufficient supply of these items, as well as any medicines you or your family use.

Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit?

It is hard to find coats, shirts or trousers to fit big or tall people, since generally Chinese people are smaller than western people. Similarly, if you have large feet, bring a sufficient supply of shoes; it is practically impossible to find shoes larger than sizes 43 or 44 (US men's size 10 or 11, UK men's size 9.5). Many foreign residents have their clothes made by the many good tailors available in the area, but it extremely difficult to find a shoemaker to make large-sized shoes.

What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at?

Foreign residents generally buy groceries at local shopping centers like Nan Fang International Plaza or department stores like Xin Da Xin. These are relatively close to the main expat neighborhoods, within 30 minutes by car. Also nearby are supermarkets in the Tian He area, like Park'N Shop and Jusco, which is very close to the expatriate developments in Ersha Island. Within Ersha Island, there are also small stores that are well stocked with western foods.

What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city?

Some expatriates are surprised by how crowded and noisy stores get, especially on the weekends. Because Guangzhou's stores serve a very large population, is crowded and noisy in nearly every store. Jusco, Park'N Shop and other stores carrying many western food products are more expensive than other stores. But the higher prices makes them less crowded.
