What are the items that I should bring with me because they’re not available (or are too expensive) where I am going?
Cairo should have just about everything you would want or need readily available in shops and supermarkets.
Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit?
This shouldn't be a problem as Cairo and other surrounding areas have many stores and clothing boutiques that cater to various sizes and shapes.
What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at?
The most popular grocery stores among expats in Cairo are the Metro Market, Carrefour, Spinneys and Alfa Market.
Even though its prices are a little more expensive, the Metro Market is typically the grocery store that most expats choose when they first move to Cairo. It is set up very similar to what you would find in the United States. Furthermore, they are very clean and organized and have a deli that serves hot and cold foods, a nice meat market and a wonderful bread selection. They also have items that are imported from abroad. It is a good grocery store to start out with because they have prices listed in both Arabic and English. You can use your credit card or ATM card, if needed.
Where can other household items (such as cleaning materials and home furnishings) be found?
A wide range of cleaning materials and household items can be purchased at the local supermarkets referenced above or any home improvement shops.
What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city?
The one thing that might take some getting used to is that there is no one-stop shopping. There are no stores in Cairo that carry everything under one roof, so you will find that you will need to shop at several different shops to get all your necessities.
