Frankfurt Young People

How well-equipped is this city for those raising infants/toddlers? Specifically, are there public places to change diapers, maintained playgrounds, etc?
Frankfurt is very well-equipped for children. Many family restaurants feature baby-changing areas, as do certain malls and other public facilities. The city also has parks in every neighborhood and offers easy access for prams and baby strollers on subways and other public transportation.

Discuss any safety issues for children in this city.
Parents should exercise normal discretion as to where they allow their children to play and congregate. Parks after dark, poorly-lit areas and busy places where people are in transit are generally places where parents should watch their children more closely.

In particular, the area surrounding the Frankfurt main train station is less than pretty, especially after dark. Frankfurt's drug culture and red light district are located in this part of town and can offer impressionable experiences for young children. Therefore, parents should keep an eye on their children inside the station as they would anywhere, although there is no particular threat inside.

What are the most popular kid-friendly attractions in the area?
The Frankfurt Zoo and the Botanical Gardens are very child-oriented and feature children’s programs with educational activities. Several of the museums also offer children’s programs on the weekend or for school children during the week. The Senckenbergmuseum is one of the kids' favorite museums since it shows dinosaurs and other extinct animals.

What are the most popular activities for kids after school or on weekends?
Lots of children take part in sporting activities or other after-school programs organized by local clubs, schools and recreation centers. Ask the school directly or the town hall for their monthly program of “what’s on.”

What's it like to be a teenager in this city? Are there any particular challenges I should be aware of as a parent?
The comprehensive public transportation system and low crime rate can give children freedom they might not have in other major cities. Sporting events, discos and school parties often provide outlets for things to do.

Parents should be aware that the legal drinking age for beer is 16 years old; to drink liquor, one must be 18. Many teenagers spend their time out with friends at pubs and clubs as the local hangout.

Are there any organizations/social groups in the area that cater exclusively to young people ages 12-17?
Frankfurt has a number of sporting clubs that offer programs for children, including the Eintracht
Frankfurt (a soccer/football club, which joined the top German league in 2003), the Frankfurt Galaxy (the American football team), tennis clubs, riding locales in the Taunus area, etc.
Many neighborhood clubs offer sporting programs. Ask Crown Frankfurt for details.

I want my child to get the most out of our stay in this country. Are there any specific opportunities to teach young people about the local culture?
Generally, large towns and cities have a variety of festivals throughout the year, each of which has children's activities. Some of the more interesting festivities in Frankfurt include the Night of the Museums (this takes place in March in Frankfurt and is a nice event for parents and older children; many other German cities have this at different times of the year), the Dippemess in May (at the Eissporthalle - the Public Ice Skating Rink), Museumsuferfest (Museum Festival) in August, and the Christmas market in December (in the center of town).
