Where can I get a list of reliable childcare providers/nannies?

This depends on the area where you are living. Certainly neighbors and colleagues can help with recommendations. As Houston is a very large city with many subdivisions and communities, the community center can be a good resource in finding reliable child -care providers within the area.

Other resources are local religious organizations and churches that have mothers day-out programs and day-care programs. For assistance with finding a nanny one can contact nanny agencies or placement agencies that offer professional sourcing qualified care-givers.

Discuss any safety issues for children in this city.

The concerns of parents in Houston are the same as those in other very large urban areas. Often the perception is that living in an urban area entails a greater risk to children due to higher crime rates. Some areas of Houston have enforced a curfew for children under 16 years of age. Other areas pay for sheriff's patrolmen to provide additional watch over young people in their neighborhood. Interested newcomers should consider neighborhoods with such arrangements when searching for housing.

What's it like to be a teenager in this city? Are there any particular challenges I should be aware of as a parent?

Living in Houston as a teenager can be an exciting and fun experience, yet of course many parents have their concerns about safety. Much of the life of a teenager revolves around the school that they attend and the neighborhood that they live in. Most teens are involved in some after-school programs, whether in sports or drama club. Teens can drive in Texas when they are 16, which is a younger age than in many other countries. Parents should keep in mind that this can give teenagers independence from school buses and parent transport at a younger age.

I want my child to get the most out of our stay in this country. Are there any specific opportunities to teach young people about the local culture?

The Houston Stock Show and Rodeo (usually takes place for a couple of weeks in late February) is a great way to experience the sights, sounds and flavors of Texas cowboy culture.

Cinco de Mayo (a Mexican-American festival in early May) and Juneteenth (an Africa-American celebration in mid-June) are also enjoyed by Houston families of all kinds of backgrounds.

Galveston, a nearby historic town on the coast, hosts yearly Christmas festivities that let young (and old) people celebrate the season in a historical setting, from the Victorian era.
