Moving can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to packing up your kitchen. We'll provide you with practical tips and tricks on how to pack your kitchen with ease. From organizing your items to choosing the right packing materials, we've got you all covered.

Prep ahead with a home inventory

There are multiple benefits to preparing a home inventory before you move. It serves as a checklist to ensure you’ve received all your belongings upon arrival. You know exactly what you had at origin and what you should have at your destination. You may consider leaving some of your small kitchen appliances with the new owner of your home to save moving hassle if you’re still looking for a buyer of your house.

Sorting and decluttering your kitchen

Try to finish off your perishable food, refrigerated foods and canned foods one to two weeks before your move. Donate those you cannot finish to a local food bank. Focus on keeping the necessities and purge all the expired food, damaged dishware, duplicate tools and items you never use in your closet. Check the weight of each item and consider its moving cost. Donate your seldomly-used items that you no longer need or want.

Choosing the right packing materials

One of the biggest sources of moving stress is breakage of items, which is likely to happen with the move of your kitchen. Choose quality, right-sized boxes for packing and organizing your items. You may prefer heavy-duty boxes for your heavy dishes. There are an array of packing supplies available at online stores tailored for protection on items of specific sizes and shapes, you may want to check them out if required.

You can purchase large rolls of bubble wrap to protect your luxurious or delicate items from damaging and scratching. A more environmentally friendly option is to use kitchen towel, clothing, linen and sheets to protect the breakables.

Categorizing while you pack

You may consider packing by section as how they are currently organized for better retrieval and labelling. Grouping specific categories together makes finding items easier. For example, group pantry items, cooking utensils, and food containers. Remember to label each box with clear writing on the cartons, so you can arrange them orderly and quickly at your new kitchen.

While you’ll still need the kitchen till the moving day, start packing with the least-used items first and keep dishes and utensils you use daily for last. Pack heavier, bigger items to the bottom of the box, lighter and more important ones at the top so you can get them from the box easily. Set aside an essentials box with dishes, cutlery, food, dish towel, dish washer, and appliance such as a coffee maker. These are things you’ll need immediately before and after the move.

Packing fragile items

Get a divider, insert it into a packing box for placing fragile and narrow items such as glass, vase, wine, specialty oil, fine vinegar. You may want to wrap them individually with packing paper and add a cushion layer on top of the glasses before you shut the box.

Wrap dishes, plates, and glassware in several layers of paper, then secure with tapes. Stacking them helps to save space, fill the additional space with packing paper for more buffering. Know more about how to pack fragile items here.

Packing appliances and electronics

Clean and place smaller kitchen appliances in boxes. Defrost your refrigerator at least one day before the move. Disconnect your larger appliances, tape the door shut, tape and secure the cords to their back. Read the manuals for how to prepare the appliances (e.g. washer and dryer) for your move.
