Will I need to drive my own vehicle to conduct my everyday life (work/school/shopping) at my destination?
Not necessarily, as taxis are readily available and quite inexpensive. However, most expats either drive themselves or hire a driver.

How can I legally drive a vehicle in this city?
All vehicles must be registered with the local police (traffic department; ask Crown Abu Dhabi for more information). In addition, expats must go to the traffic department in order to obtain a local UAE driver's license. Insurance is mandatory (third-party liability).

In the UAE, people drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Describe typical public transportation an expat might use to get around the city.
Expats generally use the local taxi service due to its low cost and availability rather than other forms of public transportation. Buses, however, are available.

Could an expat also use public transportation to get out of the city—to surrounding towns, recreation areas or suburbs? If so, list options.
Taxis are the only public transportation available for attractions outside the city limits. However, public buses run between the major cities in the UAE, including Dubai, Al Ain, Fujairah and Sharjah.

The local population tends to drive rather quickly at times, so it's best if you keep your wits about you at all times.

Where do I buy tickets/tokens/etc. for the major public transportation?
Payment for taxis can be made in cash to the driver; tickets for the bus service between cities can be purchased at the bus station.
