How close-knit is the expat community in this area? How do I get involved with it?
There are many organizations for those interested in meeting others with similar interests or those from specific parts of the world. One of the most reliable ways to get the inside story on life in
Indonesia is by talking with expatriates who live here.

Below is a list of clubs that many expatriates join:

  • American Women’s Association (AWA)
  • American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (AMCHAM)
  • British Chamber of Commerce (Britcham)
  • ANZA (The Australian & New Zealand Association)
  • BWA (British Women's Association)
  • CWA (Canadian Women's Association)

Other popular clubs include the International Sports Club, Club Rasuna, Quantum Athletic Club,
Mercantile Athletic Club and the Hilton Executive Club, all of which provide both social and sporting activities.

Many expatriates (and spouses) participate in charity work or get involved in Indonesian culture in some way. The Women’s International Club (WIC) has members of several different nationalities.
Organized in 1950 to encourage friendship and understanding among different nationalities, it has a clubhouse and offers language and cooking classes, music groups, cultural studies, social welfare groups and other programs. It is a lot of fun and highly recommended!

  • The Indonesian Community Activity Centre (ICAC)
  • Indonesian Heritage Society
  • Sahabat Satwa - Friends of the Zoo
  • Jakarta American Club

Beside expat groups, what is the best way to make social connections outside of work?
Most expats socialize with neighbors, colleagues and friends. Many meet new people at the nearby country clubs or social clubs. Places of worship are other good places to meet people. Or, as mentioned above, volunteering your time to an organization or charity event are great ways to meet people and get involved in the community at the same time.
