What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city? What are the items that I should bring with me because they’re not available (or are too expensive) where I am going? Many specialty items in Nanjing are difficult to find such as deodorant, many over-the-counter drugs from your home country, and food items for cooking. It is suggested that one brings “comfort” items or foods from their home country so that their transition easier. In addition, you may have trouble locating a good selection of western CDs and books in shops. ↑ Top Will anyone have particular trouble finding clothes that fit? Although it is difficult to find clothing in Nanjing for Westerners of larger sizes, there are some department stores that offer clothing comparably priced to one’s home county. ↑ Top What grocery stores do expats in your city shop at? Fortunately in Nanjing there are now a variety of international supermarkets or grocery stores. Wal-Mart, Carrefour, Auchan, Metro, and a few specialty stores are now operating in Nanjing. Although these stores originate from abroad, they appeal to the taste, and carry items that mainly cater to the Chinese market. Each store does carry imported (items from abroad) items, but one may have to visit a few stores to make one meal from their home country. ↑ Top Where can other household items (such as cleaning materials and home furnishings) be found? Many of the aforementioned supermarkets offer cleaning items and home furnishings. If you are newly arriving at Nanjing, it is suggested that you visit Metro, which is located about 20 minutes from the city center. There are also many local Chinese stores that sell home furnishings, but the quality may not meet one’s standards. ↑ Top What are factors that might affect my shopping habits in this country/city? Some items may take a relatively long time to find. In addition, travel to some shopping areas and stores may be difficult, depending on distance and/or your fluency in Chinese. ↑ Top IMPORTANT NOTE: Crown Relocations has made every effort to present accurate information.
