Preparing to relocate abroad

Relocating to a new country can be an exciting new chapter in your life, but it can also be a very stressful time. Finding your way in a new culture, getting to grips with the new way of life and leaving your old one behind can be confusing.

Taking the time to get organised and really prepare for your move can help you to have a smooth transition.

Here are some helpful tips to help you get ready for your relocation:

Learn the language

Take a beginners language course in the native language of the country you are moving to. Picking up the basics before you arrive will help you to navigate your daily tasks when you arrive. Such as, shopping, asking the locals for directions and eating in a restaurant. Once you have settled in to your new life you will have many opportunities to develop your language skills further.

Healthcare

You may find that the healthcare system in your new country may be different to what you are used to. You will want to research this before you leave. Arrange for temporary insurance cover until you have made arrangements to register for the healthcare system in your new country. This will cover you if you need any medical help before you are registered and save on unnecessary bills.

Financial management

Read up on which tax rates will be applicable to you in your new home. Also don’t forget to take in to account exchange rates and any financial implications of moving abroad. If necessary enlist the help of a financial advisor who can give you expert guidance.

Announce that you are leaving

Don’t forget to inform relevant organisations that you are leaving the country. Notify your bank, credit card companies and your utility providers. Arrange a date for all final bills to be paid and organise for your mail to be re-directed to your new address.
