It’s never too early to start researching your options

It's best to talk to people and find out exactly how much warmer, or more relaxed, or better for business other places really are, as it's much easier to be objective at the outset.

Once you’ve chosen your desired country—or at least narrowed it down to a few—find out exactly what you’ll need to do to relocate. You can find extensive information on-line, and it may also be helpful to contact the embassy or consulate of the country for the most current requirements. You’ll also be able to ask questions and get answers more quickly.

You’ll need to find out about:

    • Visas and permit requirements
    • Required medical exams and immunizations
    • Restrictions or taxes on shipped household items or vehicles
    • Requirements for bringing pets, if applicable

One of the most important factors will be visa requirements. These vary greatly by country and can be fairly streamlined or more complicated. You will likely need to provide a number of vital records and legal documents (such as your passport, birth certificate, proof of residency, and medical records) so start getting those together before you apply for a visa.

Also, search online for expat forums for your country of choice. It’s always helpful to talk to people who have done what you are thinking of doing, and can give both the pros and cons to moving and living abroad.
