Moving quotes: The need for consultation before moving

With the advent and prevalence of digital technology, one expects simple and speedy solutions. If something can be done in a click, why bother picking up the phone?

The same scenario manifests in case of international relocations too. We want our queries answered almost immediately and some of us prefer receiving responses over an email or the phone.

Can we really rely on quotations which are furnished without even a visual check of the things to move?  What are the risks?

A relocation consultant or a surveyor can help you in this regard.

The moving quote

The moving quote is a non-binding estimate of your moving costs. Quotations for domestic moves may include:
  • Transportation cost
  • Fuel surcharge
  • Origin service charge
  • Destination service charge
  • Packing/unpacking
  • Packing materials
  • Preparation of an itemized inventory
  • Pick up and collection from your premises
Quotations for international moves may include:
  • Supply of all new packing materials
  • Packing of your household goods and personal effects by trained and experienced packers
  • Preparation of an itemized inventory
  • Collection from your home
  • Crating/containerization and delivery to the terminal
  • Preparation of all export documentation and all import documentation
  • Payment of terminal charges
  • Delivery direct to store/residence within a 50km radius of the destination port
  • Unpacking and clearance of all waste materials

The home consultation

In order to receive precise quotations, it is recommended that your goods are measured carefully. The cost of the relocation is dependent on the total weight and volume of your shipment as well as the travel distance between the origin and destination points. The huge variety of items in your household goods require different and sometimes specialised packing techniques and materials. Even some materials can’t be taken using certain modes of transport.

These factors make it even more imperative that an experienced and a professional relocation consultant advises you on your move. Once these details and requirements are clearly figured out, the relocation company can come back with a realistic and accurate quotation for handling the transport of your personal effects.

The risks of omitting the consultation

These days accepting estimates or quotations over the phone or through online medium has gained currency. It is no doubt an easier, comfortable and time saving option, however, there is no substitute to a considered advice.

An online estimate though can seem time saving but in the longer run it may result in inaccurate costs and cost escalations due to the physical survey and consultation not being availed.

Sometimes, the cost escalations can run up to as much as twice or three times the offer that was signed.

No matter whom you relocate with, if your shipment is more than the contents of one bedroom, you should have a consultant visit your home – either in person or virtual, through a virtual consultation. And even then you should read the fine print and ask questions if anything is unclear.
