Preparing to relocate

Relocating to a new country can be the most exciting time of your life, but it can also be highly stressful. Getting to grips with a new country, way of life and leaving the old one behind can be confusing.

If you spend some time getting organised it can help you to have a smooth transition.

Here are a few tips for getting prepared:

Learn the language

Take a beginners course in the language prior to moving. You don’t have to be completely fluent but as long as you are able to master the basics it will help you to navigate daily tasks like shopping or eating in a restaurant. Once you have moved you will have many opportunities to build on your language skills.

Healthcare

The Healthcare system might be different in your new country. Be sure to research this before leaving. Organise temporary insurance cover until you are registered in the healthcare system in your new country. In the instance that you become unwell this will prevent an unnecessary bill.

Financial management

Read up on which tax rates will be applicable to you in your new home. Also don’t forget to take in to account exchange rates and any financial implications of moving abroad. If necessary enlist the help of a financial advisor who can give you expert guidance.

Announce that you are leaving

Don’t forget to inform relevant organisations that you are leaving the country. Notify your bank, credit card companies and your utility providers. Arrange a date for all final bills to be paid and organise for your mail to be re-directed to your new address.
