Top tips for getting ready for an international move

When preparing for an international move there are many things to take care of. Getting organised is key to ensuring you have a quick and easy move.

Here are a few tips to help your move go according to plan:

De-clutter

In advance of your moving day, minimize the amount of items you will move. If you haven’t used an item in over a year then throw it away. You might be able to sell some items online or at a car boot sale. Keep in mind that depending on where you move it might not be worth bringing your appliances due to different voltages and plugs.

De-food

Use up food from your refrigerator, freezer, and cupboards as you won’t be able to take it with you. Refrain from doing too much grocery shopping or buying in bulk before the move.

Get the word out

Get the word out to friends and family members that you're moving. Send them an e-mail with your new contact information or consider sending a moving announcement. Fill out an official change of address form and also consult any companies you are signed up with and inform them that you are moving. Cancel any magazine subscriptions and set up delivery in your new neighborhood.

Protect valuables

Gather valuable paperwork, jewelry, and any small high value belongings. Keep these special items separate from your moving boxes and make a plan for transporting them by hand or via a trackable shipping service with insurance. Prepare an inventory by listing the high-value items and take photographs.

Packing preparation

If you are moving major appliances, make sure that they're cleaned, unplugged, and ready to go. Freezers need to be defrosted and you may need a professional to disconnect gas lines on particular appliances. Fill prescriptions and make sure that everyone has packed medications they need in their suitcase. Ensure you have enough cash, checks, or a credit card to pay for any unexpected expenses.
