Will I need to drive my own vehicle to conduct my everyday life (work/school/shopping) at my destination? 

You can travel by metro, tram, taxi, metrobus, dolmus, minibus, ferry boat, motor boat, sea bus and normal buses in the city. Your own car is useful, but not essential.

How can I legally drive a vehicle in this city?

You will be able to drive with an International Driver’s License, which you should get translated and notarised.

Driving is on the right, but when you first experience the traffic you may not be so sure!

Describe typical public transportation an expat might use to get around the city. 

Expats will often use the metro, trams and boats to get from Europe to Asia.

Could an expat also use public transportation to get out of the city—to surrounding towns, recreation areas or suburbs?  If so, list options. 

Yes Internal Flights are frequent to major Turkish cities. There are regular overnight sleeper and daytime bus links to all major Turkish cities, as well as ferry/boat services to coastal areas. The train links are currently being upgraded from Istanbul to Ankara.

In regards to transportation, are there any safety issues I should be aware of? 

None really, but as with most major cities, you should be aware of pickpockets.

Where do I buy tickets/tokens/etc. for the major public transportation? 

The most common method is the Istanbulkart, a contactless smart card which can be purchased at major transport interchanges by paying a refundable deposit and loading the card with credits. For individual journeys, you can also buy a token.
