Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?

Not usually for public schools. In contrast, private schools often require that you fill out an application. Some might also conduct an interview with the parent, the child and the school's head reviewing the child's portfolio prior to enrolment. Because many private schools have waiting lists, it is recommended that you contact the school of your choice as soon as you arrive so you are able to secure a place on the list.
