Five tips to follow prior to your moving day

Moving from Spain can be an exciting time offering a new start, but without careful planning and attention to details, the exciting times could turn to frustrations if you don’t plan accordingly.

Create different checklists

Write important things down so you don’t forget the important details. Make different checklists and organize them into sections such as: important documents, utility services, who to notify about the move, packing items, donation items, disposal items etc. Writing important things down and crossing them off will keep you on track and will provide a sense of accomplishment knowing that you’ve completed that task. Make different copies of the checklists so everyone involved in the moving can collaborate.

Make two inventory lists

Create two inventory lists, one for your household items and another for items that have a high monetary value and should be insured. The list with your households items can then be reviewed at your destination and you can then check off each item on as it is unloaded. This provides a great system making sure nothing was misplaced during the move.

The other list is a detailed inventory of your belongings that have a higher economic value. This list will be more detailed since this will cover all of your valuable items. You’ll want to add the approximate value, the condition of the item, and take some pictures of each item in case they are damaged or lost during the move.

Valuable documents

Keeping all of your valuable documents such as passports, birth certificates, health insurances, photo albums, inventory receipts, transit protection and insurance documents, storage drives and other important items in a safe location away from the rest of your belongings. That way they aren’t accidentally packed with your other items that may not be accessible when you need them. Also, keeping additional copies will add some protection if they happen to get misplaced.

Moving with children?

Finding the right schools, kindergarten, extra-curricular activities and a sense of community are expressed by families moving abroad. Parents know that children will need time to adapt to a new location, especially if they’ve been in that one place for most of their lives. Talk with them and explain them the reasons for the relocation. Be patient if they are having troubles at the beginning. Emphasize the positive experiences and benefits they will receive in their new destination. Some children may have a hard time leaving the only friends they’ve had.  Comfort them that they will still be friends and that now they have an opportunity to make new friends and new memories. Also, with today’s technology, staying connected to friends and family is easier than ever using mobile devices and software’s like FaceTime, WhatsApp or Skype.

Relocating with pets?

Relocating can bring stress to parents, kids, and also the family pets. Take time to prepare your pet several weeks before the moving day. One way to prepare your pet and make the transition easier is to place boxes around your house so they get used to seeing them. If your pets aren’t used to crates, some weeks before the move, encourage them to go inside a crate and reward them for doing so. On moving day, stay close to your pet and keep it out of the mover’s way so they can focus on the work.

Following these guidelines can help relieve pressure and make your moving into your new location happy and exciting.  For a free quote or to request a consultation with a local move expert in Spain please contact Crown Relocations.
