Top tips on finding work after relocating

Relocating to a new country is an exciting adventure but it can also be challenging. In addition to packing your belongings and settling in to a new home, you will need to be able to find work to cover the cost of your bills and daily living.

Here are a few tips for finding work

Research

It’s important to gain some local knowledge of your new town: what kind of industries, jobs and employers there are within commuting distance from you. If you’ve moved into a town that doesn’t have many opportunities you’ll also need to keep in mind the ones that exist in town and cities surrounding your own.

Local media and new friends

One of the best ways to gain local knowledge is to read the local newspapers, listen to local radio and TV stations, make friends with your neighbours and fellow townspeople, and find out if there are any employment fairs or networking events that you can attend, and which are specific to your career or the industry that you’ve been working in.

Research local employers

Certain websites and directories can help you to locate local employers and companies that might be of interest to you, and, you never know, they might also need your skills. Once you’ve located the firms of interest to you, try to call them to find out who you need to speak to, and then send in a targeted CV and covering letter.

Updating profiles

Moving to a new town or city also means that you have a lot of updating to do. You won’t be helping yourself find a new job if you haven’t updated your profile and location on your social networks, recruitment sites, blogs and websites. If you have placed your contact details, such as your mobile and landline numbers, on various websites and social networks, you will also need to make sure these are amended and up to date. Don’t forget to also make full use of your social networks (e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter). Find out if there are social events of interest to you, which could help you meet people and gain employment in your local area.
