Helpful Apps for travelling to China

If you are leaving Switzerland and travelling to China, don’t count on the apps you are using at home, they just won’t work.

Here are some useful apps for your trip to China:

WeChat – WeChat is very popular in China, mostly because it has everything. You can chat with other people, you can see events in your area and you can even scan codes. Everyone uses WeChat so there are a lot of helpful things you can find, such as housing, nightlife or local expat groups. You can even hook it up to your Chinese bank account and pay with your phone.

Didi Dache – This app is basically the Chinese version of Uber. You can add foreign credit cards and you can use the app in English. The app also auto-translates, so as long as you keep the message simple, the driver should be able to understand you. If the driver calls you, you can always send him a message explaining that you don’t speak their language. It’s easy to use and a real lifesaver when you need to get somewhere without knowing a word of Chinese.

Pleco and Baidu Translate are great apps for translating Chinese. Pleco works better if you want to translate some words or phrases, and Baidu will come in handy when you need to translate longer sentences.

Baidu Maps is a great replacement for Google Maps. It basically works the same and it’s a big help if you don’t have a built-in mapping system. Sometimes the built-in maps can’t be incorrect, and not a lot of people like using them.

Even if you download all these apps for your stay, you don’t want your other social accounts to just disappear. Try using Express VPN! They offer a 1-year plan if you are staying for a long time, but they also have monthly plans, so you don’t have to commit to a full year of VPN service.

Xe Currency Converter is a great app, because you don’t have to memorize the currencies and it also works without any internet. Just download the currencies you will be needing and the app will do the converting for you.

Eleme is a great app for ordering food. It’s really easy to navigate and they just have the best deals all the time. You may need some help in the beginning setting up your address, but you should not have to worry about not speaking Chinese.

Taobao and JD are great for shopping online. You can literally find anything on these websites and translate them with Google Chrome’s auto-translate. You can also download the app because it’s very easy to navigate, but it doesn’t have an English version.

Mobike and Ofo are great apps for bike sharing! You can rent a bike and after getting to your location you can leave it there. The apps are great because all you need to do is put a deposit in to the app, create an account and you can get a bike anywhere!

So if you are travelling to China, don’t forget to consider these apps for your trip. If you need help moving to another location, please contact your local relocation service.
