Planning to relocate with your family?

How does parenting at home vary from parenting as an expat? The two essential rules for expatriate parenting should be love and support.

Lack of support Network:

One of the main difference for parenting as an expat than from parenting at home, is the absence of our close support network of family and friends. And if we are also a non-working spouse, we may also missed the emotional support of our partner. Frequently at the beginning, they are busy or travelling and adjusting themselves to their new role. Searching ways to get the support we need as parents is one of the main concern for expatriates.

Luckily, in most places there are groups in place that can help. Expats parents should try to find some activities to do that really like. It may be something that you have done before relocating or something totally different that you would like to discover. It might be learning something new, like the local language, any sport activities or volunteering.

Try to search for an activity that involves others, as this is the best way to start to build a new support network abroad and to build relationships. Try every day to have a conversation with someone new.

Give special support to your Children:

Your child may be frustrated to leave family and friends behind and having to deal with making new friends. Each child might have a different managing mechanism for that frustration and parents should look for those signs to keep them safe. Usually it is just a matter of time as they become comfortable in a new place before they come back to their normal behaviour.

It is important to offer comfort to your children that show them that they are deeply loved by both parents. If possible, try to schedule one family event each week, such as  pizza night on Friday or Sunday brunch together. Ideally, children should also be able to spend some quality time with each parent whenever is possible. Another good idea may be  to arrange play dates and proactively seeking out for sports activities and other play opportunities.
