Dos and don’ts when relocating alone

Relocating alone can be exciting and daunting at the same time. Some of your wishes will probably come true, as well as some of your fears. However, it is an opportunity to open yourself up to new experiences, discover new places and start over. It's the adventure of a lifetime! Read some great tips from Crown's team for settling in successfully when relocating alone:

1) Do become familiar with your new surroundings

Be curious and start exploring your new area. Use your favorite search engine, grab a guide book, check our destination guides or ask the locals (don’t be afraid, they will be pleased to help you!) and explore what can be seen and visited. Step out of your comfort zone and foster your inner sense of adventure. You will notice how that once intimidating new city is full of places that you love!

2) Don’t judge your new culture

Embrace the differences between your previous and your new culture and your new life. One thing that you have to accept when you relocate is that the living environment is not going to be the same. Accept that every place has unique things and try to understand why the things are the way they are in your new area.

3) Don't isolate yourself

Settling in in a new place can be a daunting task, especially if you are not an outgoing person. However, remember it is important to go out and meet new people in order to feel as you are part of a group. Check out some events in the city, go to a coffee shop, have lunch outside. If necessary, plan your days well in advance, making sure that you interact with different people daily. These days, you can find a lot of apps and online groups for Expats in every area. Give them a try and see what kind of events there are.

4) Do accept that it takes time to settle

Remember it is going to take time and patience to settle in and make lasting friendships. Every person has their own pace to adjust to changes. Do not harm yourself by comparing your experiences to those of other people. Just try to be positive and open-minded and remember that this new challenge will be a great learning experience.

5) Do maintain your relationships

Keeping in touch with your friends and family is essential during your period abroad. They will comfort you during tough times and they will always be there for you, even when you are far away. In addition, if you keeo in touch with the poeple who were close to you before it will make your move back home so much easier after your experiences abroad come to an end.

6) Do join clubs and volunteer

When you relocate you should try and keep your previous interests and hobbies or alternatively take up something new that you have always wanted to do. This is an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people. Football, tennis, yoga, writing, singing… There are clubs for everyone, make sure you find the one that's right for you! If you feel like it, you can also volunteer in a local charity. You can volunteer in plenty of areas ranging from animals to school support. This is a great way to learn more about your community and maybe even make some new friends.
