Expats in the UAE: Changes to health insurance requirements

If you are planning to relocate to the United Arab Emirates, please be aware of the following immigration changes: The UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) no longer requires proof of medical insurance or a health card to undertake a medical test for a residence visa. Only after the applicant has completed the medical test will proof of medical insurance or a health card be required.

According to Dubai Health Insurance Law No. 11 of 2013, all Dubai residents – employees and dependents of sponsors (including domestic workers) – must be covered under basic health insurance by June 30, 2016.

Insurance is also mandatory for all visit and tourist visa applicants. Visitors to the UAE will continue to acquire travel health insurance. Nationalities who are eligible for visas-on-arrival are currently exempt from this regulation.
