From jaw-dropping natural beauty to a welcoming, laid-back lifestyle, New Zealand blends adventure with a strong sense of community.
To help you get a real feel for what it’s like to live there, we caught up with Clarence — a proud Kiwi — who shares firsthand insights on everything from embracing the local culture to making the most of your weekends.
What are the biggest cultural differences expats should be prepared for?
Pace of life in New Zealand is more relaxed and friendly. If you’ve lived in the UK, things can be very hectic; people, traffic, noise etc. The pace in New Zealand is far more relaxed and so much more quiet.
People have more time for each other than here in the UK, especially compared to London. Also, the Māori culture is an important part of the identity of New Zealand and it is great to immerse yourself into it.
People wear less suits and formal wear than here in Europe! Get yourself a pair of janda.
How important is work-life balance in New Zealand culture
Kiwis have a great work-life balance. Kiwis spend more time outdoors in their spare time whether it’s going for a walk, go surfing, sailing or swim in rivers. The outdoors is a big part of the kiwi culture.

How do New Zealanders typically spend their weekends and holidays?
When I lived in New Zealand we would go for walks, a swim, sailing, go to our bach (like a summer home) in the Marlborough Sounds, have lunch in town and sit on the terrace.
What’s the food scene like? Are there many international cuisine options?
The food scene in New Zealand is amazing. With so many cultures living together there is a plethora of options. The big cities have amazing restaurants but event the smaller towns have great options. Asian food is very good in New Zealand as well as contemporary European cuisine. Furthermore the Māori and Pacific cuisine is also very interesting and I would definitely recommend a hāngi!
