From friendly locals and stunning landscapes to a thriving café culture, life in New Zealand offers a unique blend of adventure and community.
We spoke to Veronica, a local Kiwi, to get insider tips on what expats can expect when moving to NZ — from settling into the culture to finding the perfect weekend plans.
What are the biggest cultural differences expats should be prepared for?
I would say be prepared for generally better customer service and a more engaging culture overall. People will acknowledge you walking down the street, say hello even if they don’t know you and shop assistance staff d actually want to help you.
How easy is it to integrate into the local community and make friends?
Kiwis are an inherently welcoming bunch of people. It might differ a little depending on location and what you do during the day but I think it’s pretty easy. Shouldn’t be long before you’re invited around for a summer bbq, to get outdoors or join a group of people for an event. We love to share who we are and what we do.
What’s the general pace of life like in different parts of New Zealand?
I grew up in and around the lower North Island, mostly in Wellington. The pace of life is great, work hard during the day but then have plenty of the evening to enjoy yourself and get out and about. Because you don’t typically have to commute for hours at either end of the day compare to say living in London, you’ll have more time and get places quicker.
How important is work-life balance in New Zealand culture?
I think work-life balance is a myth, you just balance work and life in a way that works for you at any given time. New Zealand is great place to get more into the life part of that equation if that is what you’re looking for.
What are some popular leisure activities and hobbies in New Zealand?
Beach walks, fishing, hiking, camping, join a local sports club, good out door eating, wineries, cafes, theatre… Full spectrum really.
How do New Zealanders typically spend their weekends and holidays?
I would say we like to get out and do things, visiting family, nipping up the coast for some fresh air and a beach day, heading out to a winery or brewery, meeting up with friends and family.
What’s the food scene like? Are there many international cuisine options?
The food in NZ is some of the best in the world! Our cafe culture is like no other in my humble (and totally non-biased) opinion. Plenty of international options to suit any taste. Again full range from some of the best cheap and cheerful places (NZ also loves a BYO) to high end.
How easy is it to get around without a car in major cities?
Public transport is pretty good in NZ, buses and trains are in Wellington where I’m from. I would suggest having a bike or car will help you get the best out of the city though for those slightly harder to reach places (thinking Scorching Bay in Welly).
