What Life’s Really Like in New Zealand: Emma’s Perspective

Considering a move to New Zealand from the UK? You’re not alone. With its stunning scenery, laid-back lifestyle and strong sense of community, New Zealand is a popular choice for those craving a change of pace.

But what’s it really like to live there?

We spoke to Emma, a Kiwi expat currently living in London, who reflects on her life back home and what makes New Zealand such a unique place to live. Her first-hand insights are perfect for anyone thinking about making the leap.

Kia Ora, I’m Emma! I lived all over the North Island of New Zealand during my childhood.

What’s the general pace of life like in different parts of New Zealand?

New Zealand is known for its relaxed pace of life, and is often described as “laid-back.” This is reflected in both work culture and social interactions. While the overall pace is relaxed, larger cities like Auckland and Wellington have a slightly faster pace compared to smaller towns or rural areas. However, even in cities, the pace is generally more relaxed than in many other developed countries – where ever you go though, everyone is super friendly.

How important is work-life balance in New Zealand culture?

Work-life balance is highly valued in New Zealand culture. There’s a strong emphasis on enjoying life outside of work, and it’s not uncommon for people to prioritize leisure activities and family time – for me it’s the access to beaches that I adore. The work culture generally supports this balance, with less emphasis on long hours and weekend work compared to some other countries.

What are some popular leisure activities and hobbies in New Zealand?

New Zealand’s stunning natural landscapes make outdoor activities incredibly popular. Hiking, surfing, skiing, fishing, and kayaking are just a few examples. Rugby is the national sport, and other popular sports include cricket, netball, and football (soccer). New Zealanders also enjoy a variety of other leisure activities, such as going to cafes and restaurants (good coffee and brunch is almost a religion), visiting art galleries and museums, and attending cultural events.

How do New Zealanders typically spend their weekends and holidays?

Weekends are typically a time for relaxation and pursuing hobbies and interests. Many people spend time outdoors, whether it’s going to the beach, hiking in the mountains, or simply enjoying a picnic in a park. New Zealand has several public holidays throughout the year, and many people take advantage of these to travel, spend time with family and friends, or simply relax at home.
