10 Facts about moving with Crown | Crown Moves America

Crown performed almost 10,000 virtual consultations globally in 2020.

That’s right! The same technology we have been using for years to inventory and calculate the weight and volume of your household goods served us well when everything went online.

What a virtual consultation can do for you:
  1. Simple and convenient – no more intrusive in-home visits
  2. Complete video recording of all items you are moving – keep track of what is moved and more importantly the condition everything is in.
  3. Flexibility – schedule a time that suits your needs to make your move simpler.

25% of all people that moved domestically in 2020 moved to be closer to family or a loved one.

Millions of Americans relocated this year because of the COVID-19 outbreak, moving out of college dorms that abruptly closed, communities they perceive as unsafe or housing they can no longer afford. Overall, around 1 in 5 U.S. adults (22%) say they either changed their residence due to the pandemic or know someone who did, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

Our largest international move in 2020 was NY to Paris – just under 50,000lbs (that’s about 50 Bull Sharks!)

Moving is what we do and we have to say that we are pretty good at it. For over 54 years, Crown Relocations US has moved families and individuals abroad and domestically within the US. We have taken part in some of the most pivotal moments in someone’s life and we take that very seriously, taking care of their prized possessions and making sure that no matter how small or large a move is every item arrives at their final destination.

US domestic moving requests increased by 25% in 2020

In a recent move analysis here at Crown, we had more domestic move requests in 2020 than ever before. While many moved within 500 miles from their original location, 14% moved to a different state. Let’s face it, many of us are working from home and now have the ability to work remotely. If you aren’t tied to a city because of work, why not move wherever you want? Including making a huge leap and moving abroad!

Top 3 states Americans are leaving: California, New York, Texas

This doesn’t come as a surprise as we saw a huge exodus from largely populated cities during 2020. If you’re thinking about making a move to a smaller city or more rural state, you’re not alone! A new Redfin report reveals that almost 29% of Redfin.com users planned on moving to a smaller metro area last year.

According to a report from the USPS, U.S. Census Bureau, in the New York metro area, 100 people left the city for every 84 people who moved in. The areas around New York City: Northwestern Connecticut and Hudson County, NY saw the largest increases in any area within the US, 197 people moved in for every 100 moving out. This is a common theme as nationwide, areas adjacent to urban centers saw more people moving in than moving out, compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Top 3 Cities Americans are moving to: Austin, TX, Raleigh/Durham, NC and Nashville, TN

As more Americans have experienced remote work, its desirability has increased. If Americans don’t already have a work-from-home job that allows them to live where they want, they’re looking to move to cities where remote work opportunities are more plentiful. Nearly 10% of the population in cities like Raleigh, Austin, and Nashville work from home, making them attractive destinations.

36% of American Movers said their move was work-related as a result of Covid-19

The growth of remote work opportunities could cause a massive shift in U.S. 2021 moving trends. Between 14 and 23 million Americans  are planning to relocate due to remote work opportunities, and more than half (54.7%) of them are moving more than two hours away from their current location.

Top 3 destinations Americans moved to in 2020: UK, Australia, Germany

This figure represents a doubling of the 1999 figure, placed at 4.1 million. The number of expats has more than doubled in the last fifteen years — a number growing faster than the rate of the U.S. population itself.

We not only move individuals and families abroad, with nearly 80 offices around the world we also move quite a few people to the United States as well. People move here for many reasons and the main reason is for work.

Here are a few tips if you are thinking about moving to the US:
  • The process of moving to the US can be complicated. It will be key to familiarize yourself with local customs and laws.
  • When you ship household good to the US, it important that you are aware of the distinction between household goods and personal effects.
  • You should also look into your medical situation. The US requires all people who want to stay in the country for an extended period of time to go through a thorough check-up, which is conducted by a local US embassy-approved physician. There is also a list of required vaccinations you have to get before entering the country.
  •  Even more rules apply if you wish to move to the US with your pets. If your pet is a dog or bird, you might need to spend a few months preparing your furry or feathery friend for the big move.
