Five ways Americans celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July

Americans in the United States, as well as around the world, will celebrate their country’s Independence Day on the 4th of July. This day is significant because it is the believed date that the thirteen colonies signed the Declaration of Independence, officially declaring themselves free from the rule of Great Britain and formed the United States of America.

Today, Americans celebrate with many activities and they can vary from state to state. However, there are some things that have become so ingrained with this day, it may seem odd if one didn’t partake in them. Please find five of America’s most common 4th of July traditions below:

The Red, White and Blue

On July 4th, Americans proudly display their patriotism by wearing the traditional red, white and blue colors found on the American flag.  Travel to the suburbs and you’ll see American flags in the front of homes, government buildings, and shopping centers across the country. Children may have their faces painted with decorative symbols or temporary tattoos of stars and stripes. Pay attention to electronic billboards and signs because you’ll read patriotic messages acknowledging the holiday and wishing people a happy 4th.

BBQ

This is the perfect time to experience authentic American BBQ. You can expect to see gatherings of friends and family relaxing outdoors and enjoying fresh beverages.  Hamburgers, hot dogs and BBQ chicken are some of the traditional foods you can expect. It’s customary for guests to bring a dish of their own to the gathering, so expect to enjoy.

Parades

Across the country, from small towns to the largest cities, expect to see local streets blocked off for a procession of parade participants smiling and waving to the crowds gathered on the sidewalks of the parade route. Promenaders often dress up in patriotic clothing and costumes making their way down with marching bands, floats, celebrities and other well-known people in the community.

Festivities

The 4th of July is actually one big celebration. Americans will gather in homes, attend neighborhood block parties, hang out at the beach or lake, go to a rodeo, or attend an organized public celebration.  Americans know how to have a good time and it won’t be difficult to find a party going on in most parts of the country.
